# Custom Detections (Email Threats)

[Material Detections](/learn-more/risk-areas/email-threats/detect/material-email-threat-detections.md) are designed and updated constantly to be effective in identifying malicious messaging, so they cover most if not all the scenarios you might want to detect for. However, you can also define your own criteria for flagging messages and automatically remediating them, using custom detections (message type) if you have a very specific use case. You choose whether matches are classified Safe, Malicious, Spam, or Unknown. Unknown surfaces a message for review without asserting a verdict. Some examples are frequent birthday wishes to someone, specific phrases in the message body, specific `replyto` emails etc.

You configure the response for matching messages in the same editor when you create the detection.

{% hint style="danger" %}
We don't recommend creating custom detections as a first step. Most use cases are covered by Material Detections.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.material.security/learn-more/risk-areas/email-threats/detect/custom-detections-email-threats.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
