# Configure Google Workspace security settings

Google Workspace includes built-in security controls that filter email before it reaches your inbox. Enabling these settings during setup maximizes what Google catches before Material ever sees a message. Configure them in the [Google Workspace Admin console](https://admin.google.com) alongside your Material deployment.

Google's Admin console UI can change. This page covers the steps to get you started. For the most up-to-date instructions and full configuration options, use the linked Google documentation. Some settings may also require a specific Google Workspace license.

### Inbound email security

#### Enhanced pre-delivery message scanning

When Google detects suspicious content in an incoming message, it delays delivery slightly to run additional security checks before the message reaches the recipient.

To enable enhanced pre-delivery message scanning:

1. Sign in to the [Google Workspace Admin console](https://admin.google.com).
2. From the left navigation, click **Apps** > **Google Workspace** > **Gmail** > **Spam, Phishing and Malware**.
3. Select your top-level organization.
4. Scroll to **Enhanced pre-delivery message scanning**, then check the box to enable it.
5. Click **Save**.

#### Advanced phishing and malware protection

This setting applies Google's detection models to analyze message content, attachments, and sender behavior. It includes three categories of protection: **Attachments**, **Links and external images**, and **Spoofing and authentication**. For each option, you can set the action to warn the recipient, move to spam, or quarantine.

To enable advanced phishing and malware protection:

1. Sign in to the [Google Workspace Admin console](https://admin.google.com).
2. From the left navigation, click **Apps** > **Google Workspace** > **Gmail** > **Safety**.
3. Enable options under **Attachments**, **Links and external images**, and **Spoofing and authentication** based on your organization's needs.
4. Click **Save**.

#### Custom spam filters

By default, Google applies a standard spam filtering threshold. You can set a stricter threshold that catches more spam, though it may also flag more legitimate messages.

To set a stricter spam filtering threshold:

1. Sign in to the [Google Workspace Admin console](https://admin.google.com).
2. From the left navigation, click **Apps** > **Google Workspace** > **Gmail** > **Spam, Phishing and Malware**.
3. Scroll to **Spam**, then click **Configure**.
4. Enter a name for this filter.
5. Check **Be more aggressive when filtering spam**.
6. Click **Save**.

### Recommend the Gmail Promotions tab to your users

The Gmail Promotions tab sorts marketing and promotional email into a separate category, out of the Primary inbox. Gmail's spam model is per user, so when your users actively sort messages into Promotions or mark them as spam, Gmail learns their preferences faster and more accurately than a single org-wide classifier.

You can't enable this centrally. Share the steps below with your users and encourage them to use the tab actively.

To enable the Promotions tab in Gmail:

1. Open Gmail.
2. Click the **Settings** gear, then click **See all settings**.
3. Under **Inbox type**, select **Default**.
4. Click **Customize**.
5. Check **Promotions**, then click **Save**.

Once enabled, users can move messages between tabs to help Gmail refine its sorting over time.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.material.security/getting-started/deployment-guides/your-first-30-days/6-enable-email-remediation/configure-google-workspace-security-settings.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
